The 37th Annual May Regatta took on a different twist. For the first time in history the event was cancelled due to high winds, 35 kt + winds; despite perfect temps in the high 80s. However, all racing fun was not lost as in the Fall 2009, ” No gotta Regatta”, as a result of a hurricane. There was no racing on Saturday. A beer can race on Sunday evolved as the winds subsided to 15 knots and below. Similar to sandlot games we all played as kids, TSC peers, and their boats took on their own informal form of competition. Isla Ventana seemed to be destination of choice for everyone, some doing one lap, and spinnaker boats doing two laps using the committee boat for the windward mark. The “Stealth Regatta” activities went without incident and all experienced a fantastic day of sailing.
The weekend kicked off with the “D” dock, dock party. The evening was hosted by Hobie Fleet 514. Cold beer, fine wine, but the rum barrel was surely missed. Most fled to the Captain’s lounge or HammerHeads for fine dining after, as the night was young.
The usual Skipper’s meeting took place at Hammerheads Saturday morning. Sponsored by Pete and Judy Burgard. For the first time, competitors had colored team shirts. 20 boats and crews were ready to go but the high winds kept us in the harbor Saturday.
TSC and the San Carlos Yacht club hosted the Saturday night “Commodores Party” at their beautiful facility above the marina offices with a wonderful view of the marina and harbor. Close to 100 Patrons backed the terrace and enjoyed a Mexican meal prepared and cooked by Marti Burden. SCYC had a full bar and staff and live music. A delightful atmosphere and good time had by all.
Sunday night the banquet was at the La Griega, a nice beach setting. Awards were given out and many were ready to head out for either home, or great sailing on Monday.
We are all looking forward to the Fall Regatta.
